Frenchs Forest Organic Food Market is no secret to locals.
Although I have been before, the sun is shining and there is a certain energy that only a summer’s day can bring. There are cars parked in every surrounding street and a steady flow of shoppers laden with fresh produce and bags of goodies. You know it is going to be good.
The sweet aroma of bacon and eggs rolls greets you as you enter and the boys at Cappuccino Afloat are dancing behind their stand, happy to see every customer. Young families are sprawled on the lawn adjoining the markets enjoying their tasty purchases and watching the world go by. I notice that most people are carrying their own eco-shopping bag which is great.
Around 100 stalls offer everything from fresh farm and organic produce to gourmet treats and other specialised produce. The ‘Morganics’
display of home grown garlic from Orange NSW makes you feel as though you were in Provence. There are olive producers, spices and even a stall dedicated to fresh sprouts; Mung bean, alfalfa and bean.
PJ and Christian from Burtons Butchery are happily chatting to passers by, sizzling samples of their meat on the BBQ. “Try it" they say.."It’s organic, locally pasteured in the Hunter and hormone free!"
The Pasta Gallery offer free range organic egg pasta including cannelloni and family size lasagnes. And for the sweet tooth the Every Day Goodness Company lure you with their gluten free desserts and tartes. Sadly the pies were sold out, which I am told are a must.

The family winner however was a bag of ‘sweet and salty’ Atomic Popcorn. Cooked in the largest vat you have ever seen and freshly bagged on the spot, this is a purchase you have generally finished before you walk out the door..and the best part is it’s only $3!
Run by the Organic Food Markets Group who have 10 local markets under their belt (including Leichhardt, Marrickville & Kings Cross), it is the type of market you can spend hours at. There is also a great selection of gift stalls including candles, organic soaps, straw brooms, colourful fair trade products and vintage clothes.
You can’t really go wrong. A jumping castle for the kids together with fresh produce for the week and a morning stroll, this is the perfect start to a lazy Sunday.
Open Every Sunday – 8am to 1pm
